Etch-free low loss silicon waveguides using hydrogen silsesquioxane oxidation masks (2011)
Journal Article
Nezhad, M., Bondarenko, O., Khajavikhan, M., Simic, A., & Fainman, Y. (2011). Etch-free low loss silicon waveguides using hydrogen silsesquioxane oxidation masks. Optics Express, 19(20), 18827-18832. https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.19.018827

An etch-free fabrication technique for creating low loss silicon waveguides in the silicon-on-insulator material system is proposed and demonstrated. The approach consists of local oxidation of a silicon-on-insulator chip covered with a e-beam patter... Active and passive composite metal-Dielectric nanophotonic devices (2011)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

We explore metallo-dielectric composite nanostructures for localization and resonant excitation of optical fields and investigate design, fabrication and testing of nanolasers. Integration with silicon photonics material platform is demonstrated.

Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings (2010)
Journal Article
Zamek, S., Tan, D., Khajavikhan, M., Ayache, M., Nezhad, M., & Fainman, Y. (2010). Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings. Optics Letters, 35(20), 3477-3479. https://doi.org/10.1364/OL.35.003477

We propose a method for miniaturization of filters based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings, so that long structures can be packed into a small area on a chip. This eliminates the stitching errors introduced in the fabrication process, which compromi... Read More about Compact chip-scale filter based on curved waveguide Bragg gratings.

Active and passive nanophotonics for information systems applications (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

This paper explores the role of nanotechnology with focus on nanophotonics in dielectric, metal, and semiconductor inhomogeneous metamaterials and devices for optical communications, information and signal processing, and sensing.

Measurement of the optical properties of gold at cryogenic temperatures (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

Optical constants of gold are measured at cryogenic temperatures. The imaginary part of epsilon exhibits a drop at longer wavelengths. This directly demonstrates that performance of metal-based optical devices can be improved by cryogenic cooling.

Curved waveguide Bragg gratings on a chip (2010)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

We demonstrate curved waveguide Bragg gratings on an SOI chip. Our approach allows long Bragg gratings to be fabricated on an extremely small area, avoiding write-field stitching errors, typically introduced in the fabrication process.

Room temperature operation of subwavelength metallo-dielectric lasers (2009)
Presentation / Conference Contribution

Lasing is demonstrated in optically pumped InGaAsP-SiO2-aluminum structures, where both the resonator and the optical mode are subwavelength in all three dimensions. In the smallest case, a 550nm diameter InGaAsP disk exhibits lasing at 1390nm.
