We present measurements of χ ^(3) in silicon in the 2.35 to 2.75μm interval, showing Kerr coefficients close to 1×10^( -18) m ^(2) /W. The results clearly identify silicon as a promising platform for nonlinear processes in the mid-infrared.

An electrically pumped subwavelength metallo-dielectric laser with a low threshold gain is demonstrated. To achieve low threshold gain, we selectively etch InP electrical channel diameter. Lasing operation is observed for temperatures up to 180 K.

We explore metallo-dielectric composite nanostructures for localization and resonant excitation of optical fields and investigate design, fabrication and testing of nanolasers. Integration with silicon photonics material platform is demonstrated.

We demonstrate an add/drop filter based on coupled vertical gratings on silicon. The concept is extended to implement a 1 by 4 wavelength division multiplexer with 3nm bandwidth, 1dB insertion loss and 16dB crosstalk suppression.

We demonstrate curved waveguide Bragg gratings on an SOI chip. Our approach allows long Bragg gratings to be fabricated on an extremely small area, avoiding write-field stitching errors, typically introduced in the fabrication process.

Optical constants of gold are measured at cryogenic temperatures. The imaginary part of epsilon exhibits a drop at longer wavelengths. This directly demonstrates that performance of metal-based optical devices can be improved by cryogenic cooling.

Lasing is demonstrated in optically pumped InGaAsP-SiO2-aluminum structures, where both the resonator and the optical mode are subwavelength in all three dimensions. In the smallest case, a 550nm diameter InGaAsP disk exhibits lasing at 1390nm.
